At every turn, it seems that the LGBT community is handed bad luck. Record numbers of southern states have passed consititutional amendments banning gay marriage. Hate crimes and employment non-discrimination bills fail to be passed, while record numbers of LGBT people are assaulted, killed and fired for nothing more than the fact that they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

We often feel betrayed by our leaders, who beg for our vote and support, often to forget about our community when the important decisions are made. Today, the California Supreme Court ruled on the wrong side of history by upholding hate embodied in Proposition 8.

Many in the LGBT community feel overwhelmed, some feel scared, others are enraged with anger. Most are found asking themselves, what next? I recently learned about a meeting of 24 LGBT leaders in Dallas, TX. There they met to discuss how the LGBT community might achieve full equal rights under the law.

The result of the meeting was the construction of The Dallas Principles. A list of 8 simple, yet profound “calls-to-action” for every lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender person and gay-supportive ally. The Dallas Prinicples isn’t just another “road-map” or “agenda.” It’s a new way of life for LGBT people.

So today while we experience a variety of emotions, ranging from heartbreak to anger, we must allow our emotions to be the vehicle to bring about change. Rioting, boycotting and negative actions will not help our movement. Moving from complacency to action, is what we must do!

The Dallas Principles helps us understand how we can do just that. So, today when you ask yourself: “What’s Next,” I encourage you to learn about The Dallas Principles and decide today, to make it a new way of life for you and your family. Together, we can DEMAND our full civil rights NOW, WITHOUT DELAY!

The issue of marriage rights for gay and lesbian Americans has been at the front of the political debate for the last few days. As same-sex couples in states that allow gay marriage unite together, eyes today will be on the decision handed down by the California Supreme Court.

(more below the fold)

In November, voters in the nation’s 2nd largest state (home of 1/8 of the total US population) was asked to vote on the issue of gay marriage. The proposition, commonly called Prop 8, passed - overturning the Supreme Court’s previous ruling allowing gay marriage. The court has heard debate on the proposition and has been working on a decision for several weeks. Many opponents of Prop 8 claim that voters did not understand how they were voting, because of the wording of the bill. Voting YES for gay marriage, would be voting NO for the proposition - something that many voters say confused them.

Recent polls show that some 74% of Californians actually support same-sex marriage and believe same-sex couples should be treated equally under the law. Those who support the proposition and the ban on gay marriage has organized in record numbers - funneling millions of dollars into the state in hopes the court will “stay” the “vote-of-the-people.”

Many of those who oppose gay marriage cite religious reasons for doing so. However, these same individuals oppose the suppression of their religious views or freedoms from another faith-view. So, basically, they want to push their faith-views on the country, but refuse to allow someone of a different faith to have their faith-views enforced by law. (i.e. Passing a constitutional amendment that required all men to pause twice a day in honor of Islamic prayer.)

Unfortunately, they just can’t have it both way. One of the principles of our country, is the separation of religion and government. Our “forefathers” moved to the new world (America) to escape a form of government run by the church. Today, they want to return America to this model of government.

I’ll anxiously await the ruling. I trust the California justices uphold fairness and equality by declaring the amendment totally unconstitutional. In doing so, they would be paving the road for the advancement of LGBT rights in our country.
